Barriers To Communication

Introduction

A barrier to communication is something which is restricting people from communicating it may be a language barrier or something as simple as a different accent, either way it stops people from communicating effectively

General Communication

Barriers in Communication

Problems with technology

Hardware problems - Hardware can be a barrier when communicating because there can be problems with different things for example the router may not be working properly and this will mean the internet cannot be accessed and emails can not be sent. Viruses can also cause problems with software and can mean that programs cannot be accesed and therefore communication through email etc cannot be used.
The audience that you are trying to communicate with may not be familiar with the technology and can therefore not communicate vial email or Skype etc.

Barrier (language Used)

The use of language can be a barrier for example the terminology that is used during communication, If the terminology is to simple then the audience will not pay attention and will get distracted easily, If the technology is to advanced then the audience will not understand what is being said and can not get involved in the conversation.
Technical terms can also be a barrier to communication because if the audience is not familiar with the technical terms then it is a waste of time and the audience will not understand and will lose interest very quickly. These barriers affect the communication and can restrict the involvement of the audience.

Barriers in interpersonal Communication.

Body Language Barriers

Body language barriers can be things like crossing arms or putting hands behind your head, this is a sign of being bored or not interested, other signs such touching or face or holding objects can be a sign that the audience is distracted and our not really paying attention and don`t want to listen.
Folding of arms is a sign of anger and this creates a negative atmosphere during a conversation.
Looking down or even checking the time while someone is talking can be a sign that you do not really care what they have to say.  These types of body language create a barrier between the speaker and listener because the person speaking will know that the person isn`t listening or interested in what they are saying and are quite bored and this will effect communication.

Written Communication Barriers.

Written Communication can be a letter email fax or a blog message and must be written correctly.
Barriers in written communication can cause problems, it can be spelling errors or not using proper punctuality within a sentence, this can mean that a sentence may not make sense and the person trying to read it will be confused. if headings are not added then the reader will not be aware of key points you are trying to make and also when writing a message there must be a proper structure to it so that the reader does not get confused by what you are trying to say and this can be a serious problem.
If the person writing the message has made a lot of grammar mistakes then the reader may not get the proper meaning from the message or just may not understand it at all. if an organisation are making these type of errors in their letters or emails it will portray them as being very unprofesional and this will not look good for the organisation.
